During my journey to explore Saudi Arabia’s best-selling honey, I had the honor of visiting the natural bee farm located high in the mountains in Al Baha. When I landed in this small town, I was first shocked by its magnificent natural landscape. The altitude of more than 2,000 meters makes the air here fresh and thin. The rolling mountains in the distance contrast with the blue sky and white clouds, forming a picturesque scenery.
Walking into the apiary, the most striking thing is the beehive design which is completely different from that in China. In China, we often see square beehives. The square beehives in China are usually arranged in an orderly manner, which is convenient for beekeepers to manage and operate. Its design also fully considers the use of space and the living habits of bees. However, in Saudi Arabia’s apiary, round beehives have become a unique landscape. These round beehives are stacked on the hillside. The circular design gives people a soft and natural feeling, which may be more in line with the original lifestyle of bees in nature. Each beehive is like a small ecosystem, in which bees are busy shuttling, working hard for survival and reproduction.
In addition to the differences in beehives, the bees themselves are also significantly different. Most of the bees in China are Italian bees, which are known for their efficient nectar-collecting ability and strong adaptability. Italian bees are of moderate size and strong body structure and can adapt to different climates and environmental conditions. However, the Saudi bees impressed me with their small and exquisite size. Although they are small in size, they are full of vitality. These tiny bees survive tenaciously in the alpine environment and have adapted to the climate and vegetation here. They are light and agile in flying among the flowers. Despite the challenges brought by the high altitude, they persist in collecting nectar, bringing precious sweet harvests to the beekeepers.
I admire the lives of beekeepers. They stick to their posts and make silent contributions in this remote mountain all year round. The environment here is difficult, transportation is inconvenient, and living conditions are relatively simple, but they have never given up their love and persistence in beekeeping.
This time I also tasted local Saudi honey, such as sammar honey, sidr honey, etc. The taste of this honey is completely different from Chinese honey. The best-selling Chinese honeys in Saudi Arabia are Chinese sidr honey, blackforest honey, polyflower honey, etc. If you want to taste Chinese honey, please feel free to contact deli foods for samples~
